Lessons from Greater Sarasota Chamber's Digital Transformation

By Karen Griffin, GrowthZone

For most of its history, the chamber website was a static asset: a digital business card, updated occasionally, and rarely central to membership strategy. The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce (GSCC) is proving that model is obsolete.

In a recent ACCE webinar, GSCC leaders shared how they turned their website into a measurable driver of membership growth, retention, and non-dues revenue, and the numbers back it up. Over the past year, the chamber’s site generated 198,000 sessions, 146,000 active users, 348,000 page views, and 1.1 million interactions. More striking: roughly 37% of new members, more than 200 businesses, joined after visiting the site and feeling, in their words, “a need to belong.”

Three principles drove that shift.

Treat the homepage like a living thing.
GSCC updates its homepage constantly, with fresh video, current promotions, and upcoming events, rather than letting it go stale between campaigns. “The biggest part about visiting a website is ensuring its information is correct,” says Hayley Nau of GSCC. “The more relevant it is, and the more frequently it’s updated, the more impressed people will be.” That discipline also does double duty for search visibility: search engines reward sites that are demonstrably active. When GSCC rebuilt its site, it cut roughly half its old pages, keeping only what the team could realistically maintain: a smaller, sharper site beat a sprawling, neglected one.

Make analytics a weekly habit, not a quarterly report.
GSCC reviews website performance every week, not just during renewal season. "We've made it a habit for our communications team to begin each week by reviewing website analytics," says Ed Hill. "It helps us understand what's resonating with members so we can continually refine our content." The homepage and events calendar consistently rank among the site's most-visited pages, guiding where the team invests its time and effort. The website becomes an ongoing feedback loop for member engagement.

Let members tell the story.
GSCC’s “Member Voices” campaign features real members describing their own experience with the chamber. It’s a simple idea with outsized effect: it gives members visible recognition, and it reframes the chamber as a community rather than a vendor, which is precisely the feeling that drives renewal.

A website can also carry its weight financially. GSCC runs rotating banner ads across high-traffic pages, not just for outside sponsors, but for the chamber’s own events and initiatives. Higher click-through, the team found, correlates with stronger SEO performance, making the tactic a rare case of a revenue lever that also improves the metric chambers care about most: visibility.

None of this requires a bigger budget than most chambers already have for their websites. It requires treating the site as a strategic channel with an owner, a weekly cadence, and a content plan, not a project that’s “done” once it launches. For chambers weighing where to invest limited digital resources, GSCC’s experience makes the case plainly: the website isn’t overhead. It’s one of the highest-leverage tools a chamber has for proving its value.
