Meet Andy Johnston, CCE, IOM, senior vice president of advocacy and strategic engagement of the Grand Rapids Chamber in Michigan. He oversees the chamber’s public policy efforts, marketing, communications and events. Andy. who has been in the chamber profession for 20 years, earned his Certified Chamber Executive designation in 2021. 

What stands out from your experience in earning your CCE?

Meeting other incredible chamber professionals who are dedicating their time and expertise to advance our industry. As I once heard, and often repeat, no little kid says they want to be a chamber professional when they grow up, but they should! Being surrounded by leaders who are intentionally building and elevating this profession helps you see it not just as a job, but as a true career path.

How has earning the CCE designation helped you grow as a chamber leader?

It really helps you to zoom out and see the whole organization. The CCE process challenged me to learn more about different areas of the work than I otherwise would have and taught me lessons I use to this day. It really helps you to think more like a systems leader and see how all the pieces connect.

What is your favorite aspect of working in the chamber profession?

A coworker once said I was the Golden Retriever of the Grand Rapids Chamber, because I get so excited about our work. And that excitement comes from helping our members drive business success that creates good-paying jobs, which builds wonderful communities. It doesn’t get any better than that.

What advice would you give to the next generation of professionals?  

“No one has died at the chamber trying a new idea.” We want to empower team members to take risks and be creative. Staying relevant in the marketplace requires a willingness to try new things. That's how we tackle new challenges and seize opportunities. It also creates a more rewarding working environment.  

What’s the best advice you’ve received in your career? 

This is a “get to” job, not a “got to” job. Every morning, I try to remind myself of that. It changes how you show up and helps you start the day with gratitude.

If you could recommend one book to your chamber peers, what would it be? 

If you haven’t read Unreasonable Hospitality yet, do it! It has great lessons for chamber professionals and all industries, and we had a lot of fun reading and discussing it on our team.  

How do you recharge after a busy week?

Time with family and friends, being in nature, golf, and, as of late, 3D printing projects have been a great way to unwind.

What inspires you? 

The idea that it is all up to us, right now. This is our chance to shape the future. And I look up to those individuals who lead with integrity and grace and create real, lasting change.   

If you had a superpower, what would it be?  

Being able to be in two places at once, and if not that, teleportation would really come in handy!  

Early riser or night owl? 

As Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen said in Back to the Future II, “I do my killing before breakfast.” Seriously, it is best time to get work done before the organized chaos of the day ensues. It also helps me tackle the toughest projects. As Mark Twain said, "If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning.” 

Fun fact: Not sure how fun it is, but I have run at least one mile, outdoors, everyday for the last 567 days…and counting!
